Thu, 29 Mar 2012 00:23:46 -0700 News 2 you http://updates.cdsa.org.nz/news-2-you http://updates.cdsa.org.nz/news-2-you Hi. This has come through from the Ministry of Education. It does require a subscription! However, I found it gave some great ideas about how to present recent news. (not endorsed by CDSA)

Angelique

News-2-You is a newspaper designed specifically for learners with a range of learning needs. It uses „universal design for learning‟ adding features like symbol supported text and/or speech to deliver news to learners who previously struggled to access this information. They have differing levels of the same topic including a communication board.
To explore more, go to the link below and check out the past edition of News-2-You which they have based on the BBC's Frozen Planet TV series, which has been recently screen here in NZ. You and your students can read all about the animals living in the North and South Poles, as well as the presenter Sir David Attenborough

Christchurch celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on Sunday March 25th.

The sun shone, the predicted thunder storms remained on the horizon and there were smiles all around.

A very happy group of Cantabrians celebrated WDSD for the first time in 2 years at Jellie Park, one of the few remaining swimming complexes in Christchurch. As you can see by the photos, it was a fun day with numerous rides on the Hydroslides, swimming in the 'almost' warm outdoor pools, plus balloons and face-painting. Thanks so much to Shelley Waters for co-ordination this.

Onwards and upwards CDSA.

Cheers from Angelique

Wed, 21 Mar 2012 01:26:00 -0700 Independent - and loving it http://updates.cdsa.org.nz/independent-and-loving-it http://updates.cdsa.org.nz/independent-and-loving-it

Kirsty Lumsden is independent and she loves it.

Kirsty, 25, has Down syndrome, but it's never held her back.
She has three jobs, lives in a flat on her own and loves coffee – with sugar of course.
She loves housework, and she cooks – her specialties are macaroni cheese, pizza and nachos – and she has a social life to rival many others her age.

At the weekend she went to Auckland to the Taylor Swift concert and she's still raving about it today – although American Idol's Adam Lambert beats out Swift when it comes to the race for Kirsty's favourite singer.

She goes to dance parties, dinners and discos.
She dances, she sings and she loves the limelight.
And her social side shines through at work too, happily chatting away with customers.

Release

Disabled people can access earthquake assistance

The Minister for Disability Issues, Tariana Turia, would like to encourage disabled people, or carers of disabled people, who need assistance due to the Christchurch earthquake to contact the government helpline.

“The government helpline, 0800 779 997, is open to take your phone calls for any help you may need. If you are disabled, or a carer of a disabled person, and you require help please contact the number. The people who answer your call will be able to provide you with the help or further contacts for services or products you need. Don’t leave it until you run out of medication or products,” said Minister Turia.

“People with disabilities may feel reluctant to ask for assistance. In Christchurch there are organisations and service providers in place ready to support disabled people with their specific needs. I encourage you not to put off your phone call,” said Minister Turia.

“I would like to thank all the non-government organisations that are keeping disabled people informed, and are working together so constructively with government agencies to offer support and assistance to disabled people in Christchurch.

“It is so pleasing to see New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters used for important earthquake announcements so Deaf people are informed,” said Minister Turia.

"One of the truly heart-warming effects to come out of this time, has been to see the levels of genuine support and compassion throughout our community.  I would hope that the needs of disabled persons and their carers are being given particular priority ".

In all instances, contact the Government helpline phone number 0800 779 997.

For more information contact Lisa Mulitalo 021 220 0886.
