School Enrolment/Discrimination problems

Red Cross - Winter Assistance Grant

Up to $400 per household paid over four months to assist with electricity bills.

The aim of this grant is to assist vulnerable households who are living in homes significantly damaged by the earthquakes, or who have had to move into damp or hard to heat accommodation. The significant damage must include serious compromise to the heating and/or insulation of the home. This grant assists households with their electricity bills over the months of June, July, August and September 2012.

A vulnerable person can be defined as the applicant or a member of their household, who must either be disabled, have a pre-existing medical condition, be 65 years or over or have children who live with them who are under 18 years.

It is applicant's responsibility to provide proof that the insulation of their residence has been significantly compromised and damaged.

Excellent trauma/grief support resources for families impacted by quakes - anywhere in NZ

We think you and your association members will want to hear about the post-earthquake support available for businesses and organisations (and their branches and families, and customers/clients) that your members will be working in. Skylight is a well respected, NZ specialist loss, trauma and grief support agency - we are a not for profit trust.

We hope you will find the attached support resources very helpful. Please take a look. (Many are putting some of these up on their noticeboards - there are 8 attachments)

Disabled people can access earthquake assistance

The Minister for Disability Issues, Tariana Turia, would like to encourage disabled people, or carers of disabled people, who need assistance due to the Christchurch earthquake to contact the government helpline.

“The government helpline, 0800 779 997, is open to take your phone calls for any help you may need. If you are disabled, or a carer of a disabled person, and you require help please contact the number. The people who answer your call will be able to provide you with the help or further contacts for services or products you need. Don’t leave it until you run out of medication or products,” said Minister Turia.

“People with disabilities may feel reluctant to ask for assistance. In Christchurch there are organisations and service providers in place ready to support disabled people with their specific needs. I encourage you not to put off your phone call,” said Minister Turia.

“I would like to thank all the non-government organisations that are keeping disabled people informed, and are working together so constructively with government agencies to offer support and assistance to disabled people in Christchurch.

“It is so pleasing to see New Zealand Sign Language Interpreters used for important earthquake announcements so Deaf people are informed,” said Minister Turia.

"One of the truly heart-warming effects to come out of this time, has been to see the levels of genuine support and compassion throughout our community. I would hope that the needs of disabled persons and their carers are being given particular priority ".

A Guide for Carers - He Aratohu mā ngā Kaitiaki

On 24 September 2009 the Associate Minister of Social Development and Employment, Hon. Tariana Turia, launched the booklet and flyer.

This is practical help for people caring for family or friends who are older or have ill health, a disability or a mental health, alcohol or other drug issue.

The guide includes information on the government-funded services and supports available for carers, such as:

· financial help

· needs assessments (NASC)

· help at home

· help if you need a break

· help related to children with special education needs

· health and disability rights

· equipment and modifications.

This resource has been developed by Carers New Zealand, The New Zealand Carers Alliance and the Ministry of Social Development.

Hard copies can also be sought by phoning Work and Income 0800 559 009.

You can also download your own copy in pdf format or word format and there are also flyers in English, Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Niuean
